Ceftibuten is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, throat, tonsils, ears, etc. caused by susceptible bacteria. This medicine is not recommended for use in case of common cold, flu, or viral infections since it is active against infections caused by certain bacteria only. 

  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis: Due to Haemophilus influenzae (including β-lactamase producing strains), Moraxella catarrhalis (including (β-lactamase producing strains), or Streptococcus pneumoniae (penicillin-susceptible strains only).
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media: Due to Haemophilus influenzae (including β-lactamase producing strains), Moraxella catarrhalis (including β-lactamase producing strains) or Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis: Due to Streptococcus pyogenes.

Ceftibuten, the dihydrate salt of Ceftibuten, is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. It exerts its bactericidal action by binding to essential target proteins of the bacterial cell wall, leading to inhibition of cell wall synthesis.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Ceftiben 400mg Capsule

Dosage varies based on the condition being treated:

  • Otitis Media, Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, Urinary Tract Infection: Adults - 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 days; Pediatrics - 9 mg/kg/day (max 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Cystitis: Adults - 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 7 days; Pediatrics - Same as above
  • Pneumonia: Adults - 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days; Pediatrics - Same as above

Dose adjustments are needed for renal impairment. No dose adjustment is necessary for hepatic impairment.

Interaction with Theophylline & Antacid is minimal. Ranitidine may increase Ceftiben's plasma levels.
